Basic Audition Requirements:
Auditions are open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Ideal candidates will have a background in rudimental drumming and spent time drumming in drumlines, but all musicians and performers are welcome. Anyone auditioning for the Steeline for the first time must pay a $10 audition fee, payable in cash or check on-site at the audition. All auditionees must register for auditions using the link at the bottom of this page.
All spots in the Steeline are open every season, and veterans re-audition each year. Our full line consists of 8 snare drums, 4 tenors (six packs), 5 tonal bass drums, 3 “boom” drummers (flat mounted marching bass drums), and 5 cymbal players.
Audition Dates, Locations, Times:
Steeline auditions will be held on the following two dates:
Sunday, June 3rd, 2018, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sunday, June 10th, 2018, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Both auditions will be held at the Irish Centre of Pittsburgh located at the address below. This facility is located near the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh.
Irish Centre of Pittsburgh
6886 Forward Ave
Pittsburgh, PA 15217
Audition Procedure and Criteria:
What to Expect
Auditionees should expect to drum as a group in a “full ensemble” drumline environment for most of the audition. Some of the time, particularly the 2nd audition date, will be broken up into sectional rehearsals (break off into groups by drum type). Most of the audition will be indoors, but some of it will be outside as weather permits.
Drums, cymbals, and bass drum mallets will be provided, however please bring your own snare/tenor sticks if auditioning for those instruments. You only need to prepare the downloadable music on this page for the audition. Some of the time will be spent drumming with drums on stands, and at other times you will be asked to wear the drum. The Steeline will provide light snacks/water at our auditions, however please bring your own at your personal discretion.
In addition to the drumming component, all auditionees will have a short one on one interview with the Steeline leadership team to discuss their background, drumming experience, and availability.
Auditionees will be evaluated on both days by the Steeline directors, section leaders, and creative staff. Auditionees will be evaluated based on:
Musicianship: You will be evaluated on how well you play the music on the page, including rhythmic accuracy, sound quality, musicality, technique, tempo, timing, etc.
Performance: You will be evaluated on your ability to entertain and engage an audience while you drum. Members of the Steeline are expected to be dynamic, enthusiastic, energetic performers who pump up Steelers fans on game day and are fun to watch!
Availability: All members of the Steeline must give reasonable assurance that they can attend all ten Steelers home games (schedule available at www.steelers.com in mid-April), as well as weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals (7:00 PM to 10:00 PM) that run from late June through mid-December.
All Steelers home games are held at Heinz Field, and all rehearsals are held at the Irish Centre of Pittsburgh (Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh). Attending the weekly rehearsals and 10 Steelers home games is the only formally required time commitment to be a full-time member of the Steeline.*
*In addition to Steelers home games, the Steeline maintains an active schedule of additional appearances/performances throughout the Pittsburgh area (parades, charity events, corporate functions, Steelers special events, etc.). While none of these events are individually required for membership, part of our evaluation will be assessing your potential availability/willingness to perform at some of these (paid) events throughout the season.
In addition to the 25 "full-time" musicians we employ, positions in the Steeline are available for "alternate" performers. Alternates are required to come to one rehearsal a month, and fill in for full-time musicians if someone is absent from a game or we are short for another performance. Alternate spots are available to anyone who is deemed qualified via the audition process and interested in this role. There is no limit on how many we take. Alternate performers must be responsible enough to learn and maintain music on their own and be prepared to replace an absent person on short notice. More details about alternate responsibilities will be provided at auditions.
