All auditionees must register for auditions using the link at the bottom of this page.

All spots in the Steeline are open every season, and veterans re-audition each year. Our full line consists of 8 snare drums, 4 tenors (six packs), 5 tonal bass drums, 3 “boom” drummers (flat mounted march bass drums), and 5 cymbal players.

Audition Procedure and Criteria:

What to Expect

Auditionees should expect to drum as a group in a “full ensemble” drumline environment for most of the audition. We will be indoors. All equipment will be provided, however please bring your own snare/tenor sticks. We will be playing only the downloadable music on this page at the audition. Some of the time will be spent drumming with drums on stands, and at other times you will be asked to wear the drum. The Steeline will provide light snacks/water at our auditions, however please bring your own at your personal discretion.

In addition to the drumming component, all auditionees will have a short one on one interview with one of the Steeline directors to discuss their background, drumming experience, and availability.
Audition Criteria

Auditionees will be evaluated on both days by the Steeline Leadership Team as well as a guest judge. Auditionees will be evaluated based on:

  • Musicianship: You will be evaluated on how well you play the music on the page, including rhythmic accuracy, sound quality, musicality, technique, tempo, timing, etc.

  • Performance: You will be evaluated on your ability to entertain and engage an audience while you drum. Members of the Steeline are expected to be dynamic, enthusiastic, energetic performers who pump up Steelers fans on game day and are fun to watch!

  • Availability: All members of the Steeline must give reasonable assurance that they can attend all ten Steelers home games (schedule available at steelers.com in late April), as well as weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals (7:00 PM to 10:00 PM) that run from late June through mid-December at the Irish Centre of Pittsburgh.*

*In addition to Steelers home games, the Steeline maintains an active performance schedule of 20 to 30 additional performances per year. We send small groups of members to play at corporate events, Steelers training camp/pep rallies, community events, parades, races, band festivals, etc. While these events are not required for membership, part of our evaluation will be assessing your potential availability/willingness to perform at some of these (paid) events throughout the season.
